Cultural Foundation, managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, will organise three remarkable new exhibitions starting 3 May 2023, Pascale Marthine Tayou’s major show LOBI LOBI, its accompanying children’s exhibit BOBO LAND, and Comic Craze Vol. 3 which celebrates the rich history of Arabic comics and beloved Japanese anime.
The flagship exhibition LOBI LOBI: Pascale Marthine Tayou, which is named after the artist’s poem LOBI LOBI (2020), seeks to evoke the parallel and cyclical realities of Tayou’s practice that transcend time and territories. Featuring sculptures, mixed media, installation, poetry, and photography, the exhibition highlights the rich paradoxes of consumer and material cultures in the artist’s reformulation of his visual environment.
LOBI LOBI is divided into four sections that follow Tayou’s multiplicities of object and language as he navigates human ecologies:
The Margin to the Centre explores Tayou’s artistic process by which he seeks to reconfigure everyday objects into living testaments of our environmental damage, and global histories. Through a tornado of colourful aluminum pieces, the artist invites an overwhelming sense of both amusement and loss.
Power Vessels showcases the artist’s contemporary crystal sculptures, which reinterpret west-central African sculptural figures. By embellishing his glass sculptures and masks in everyday found objects, he creates his own personalised authenticity in each of them, resulting in new depositaries of history.
Fantasia Urbaine demonstrates Tayou’s take on the spiritual meaning of continuity and healing, leading to new interpretations of material and an impactful exchange between community nature and the environment. This section also features a video installation of the artist’s Fantasia Urbaine, a parade he organised in 2007 to celebrate Cameroon’s street vendors.
The accompanying children-focused exhibit BOBO LAND: Pascale Marthine Tayou leads young visitors into an exploration of the self through the eyes of ‘Bobo,’ Tayou’s persona of a dreaming child discovering and inventing their future. Through a series of interactive and engaging installations, children will actively take part in a dream where they will play and get the chance to reinvent who they are, what they want to be, and what they will become.
The exhibitions are curated by members of the Culture Sector at DCT Abu Dhabi, curators Maisa Al Qassimi, Noor Almehairbi and Reem AlHashmi.
Comic Craze sheds light the evolution in style and content of Arabic comics and satirical cartoons from the 1800s to the present day. Featuring the creations of 49 UAE-based artists, visitors can explore creative illustration and animation ranging from historical comic magazines to popular Japanese anime productions that were dubbed into Arabic in the 1980s. The impact of such productions extended beyond providing entertaining narratives for children; their content is rich with deep humanitarian messaging and engaging soundtracks that continue to echo among generations from the Arab world.
Visitors will get the chance to meet new characters and protagonists inspired by modern local culture. Comic Craze also includes interactive elements such as screens broadcasting nostalgic cartoon theme songs, character figurines, and a photo booth equipped with comic props.
The exhibition is curated by members of the Culture Sector at DCT Abu Dhabi, curator Sumayya Al Suwaidi, and assistant curator Aysha Al Aseeri.

Event Details
Tate St Ives will be the first museum in the UK to explore the intense period of artistic rebirth that followed Morocco’s independence, forged by the experimental teaching methods of the Casablanca Art School in the 1960s and 1970s.
Led by Farid Belkahia alongside Mohammed Chabâa, Mohamed Melehi and others, this pioneering school paved the way for a new generation of socially engaged modern artists who formed an influential avant-garde network.
Works by 22 artists will be brought together to demonstrate the wide variety of the Moroccan ‘new wave’, from vibrant abstract paintings and urban murals to applied arts, typography, graphics and interior design.
The exhibition will also include a selection of rarely-seen print archives, vintage journals, documentary photographs and films.
This exhibition is a collaboration between Tate St Ives and Sharjah Art Foundation, where it will open in February 2024. It is also part of a key moment of international research into the Casablanca Art School, which includes a collaborative project initiated in 2020 between KW Institute for Contemporary Art and Sharjah Art Foundation, in partnership with Goethe-Institut Marokko, ThinkArt and Zamân Books & Curating.
Exhibition artists:

Event Details
“Institut du monde arabe” is pleased to announce hosting a group exhibition titled “WHAT PALESTINE BRINGS TO THE WORLD”.
The two registers of images in this exhibition, taken in the 19th century and today, share a common medium, photography, and a common reality, Palestine. However, everything distinguishes these two sets beyond their “age difference”. They are two modes of seeing , two conceptions of Palestine. Placed in dialogue, these two gazes each show in their own way, the quest of the Palestinians towards the reappropriation, through images, of their own story.
The first look, orientalist, will have serious consequences for decades, making Palestine a Holy Land, frozen in time, prisoner of a past never ended, promised to an infinite quest for an ancient glory, waiting for its “‘legitimate’ saviors, missionaries and settlers, to come back to life. This set brings together around thirty views – landscapes, genre scenes and portraits – printed using the Photochrom process , which made it possible to colorize black and white photographs.
Patented in 1889 by the Swiss Orelle Füssli, this technique consisted in transferring the negative of a photograph onto lithographic stones – up to 14 – whose superposition of transparent inks resulted in an impressive chromatic variety while allowing retouching. The company Photoglob Zurich, which shamelessly drew on the works of 19th century photographers , marketed these lithographs under the PZ label to pilgrims and tourists who came to Palestine. The Photochrom process was supplanted in 1910 by the development of color film.
The second look is that of 14 contemporary Palestinian photographers – Mohamed Abusal, Shady Alassar, Rehaf Al-Batniji, Taysir Batniji, Raed Bawayah, Tanya Habjouqa, Rula Halawani, Maen Hammad, Hazem Harb, Safaa Khatib, Eman Mohammed, Amer Nasser, Raeda Saadeh, Steve Sabella– who deliver “inhabited” images of their land. Based on their intimate experiences, these artists offer embodied and dynamic visions of daily life in Palestine, far from any victimization or heroization. Endowed with black humour, their works try to overcome the yoke of oppression, by addressing a cynical, playful and visionary account of the relationships of domination. Between photojournalism and art, documentary or conceptual photography, they reclaim public space, through creative gesture and bodily performance, as an act of resistance. Through these images, they claim the right to create, to express themselves, to circulate, but also the right to the city, to leisure, to dreams. Through these alternative visual narratives, they create an offbeat and expanded representation of Palestine to address, beyond confinement.

Event Details
Zawyeh Gallery is pleased to present a virtual exhibition titled ‘Reflections in Free Fall’ by Palestinian artist Bashir Qonqar.
In ‘Reflections in Free Fall,’ Bashir Qonqar invites us to delve into the social tapestry of our existence, exploring the intricate threads that bind individuals within a society. Through his astute observations and nuanced reflections, Qonqar employs various techniques and mediums, including painting, drawing, digital work, filmmaking, music, and performance, to engage with the multifaceted nature of human interactions.
Qonqar’s ‘Free Fall’ project, initiated in 2013 and still evolving, emerged from a series of paintings that serve as a testament to Qonqar’s artistic vision. In this ongoing exploration, geographical boundaries dissolve, and the place itself becomes an ethereal reflection of our collective essence. The canvas transforms into a mirror, a stark reminder that there is no escape from the truths embedded within us.
In this exhibition, Qonqar masterfully illustrates the absurdity that permeates our world, deftly highlighting the schism between societal norms and individual morals. Vibrant and provocative, his use of color seeks to preserve the beauty and joy found within the visual spectrum, offering a striking contrast to the content of the paintings themselves. This intentional juxtaposition serves as a candid acknowledgment of the ghostliness that often lurks beneath the surface of reality.
Having left Palestine in 2018 and subsequently settling in Bad Goisern, Austria, Qonqar found himself immersed in a new environment surrounded by trees and woods. Through his exploration of these natural elements, he discovered that he was inadvertently delving into his own personal narrative. In this introspective journey, Qonqar’s artwork becomes a reflection of his own experiences, fears, weaknesses, and strengths, intertwining the universal and the personal in a captivating display.

Lawrie Shabibi is pleased to announce As by chance!, a group exhibition at the Museum of Art and History in Cholet, France, featuring artworks by Iraqi artist Mehdi Moutashar.
Mathematics has long maintained a deep and intricate relationship with the arts, particularly in the realms of architecture, sculpture, and painting. This connection becomes evident when examining the characteristic works of geometric abstraction, also known as constructed art.
However, it is important to approach these artistic creations with nuance. While artists in constructed art often draw inspiration from mathematical principles, their level of familiarity with theorems, irrational numbers, elementary geometry, probability, statistics, or chaos theory may vary. As a result, their utilization of mathematics in their works can range from prominent and deliberate to subtle and concealed.
The exhibition brings together internationally renowned artists and emerging creators from various backgrounds, including painters, visual artists, and videographers, who are active participants in the German and French artistic scenes. The proposals showcased in this exhibition represent a wide diversity of approaches. Curious visitors are invited to explore the mathematical elements present in these artworks, which often owe their existence, in large part, to the influence of chance—a mysterious principle with unsuspected effects.

MACAM is pleased to announce to announce hosting “Crossed Perspectives” exhibition, from August 10 to October 1, 2023, at MACAM, Chloé Coomans (Belgium) and elparo (France)’s exhibition “Crossed “Perspectives” blends their different art forms, exploring new cultures and environments.
Chloé Coomans (Belgium) works in various mediums, including sculpture, painting, screen printing, printing, ceramics, and video, while elparo (France) started as a graffiti artist and later transitioned to painting on canvas. He now focuses on in-situ sculptures.
During their one-month residency at MACAM, the two artists took the time to fully immerse themselves in the surroundings, drawing inspiration from the environment to create an indoor and outdoor exhibition, incorporating various art forms such as sculpture, drawing, and video. The raw materials they used consisted of natural elements, prompting reflections on their creative process and the inherent history of the industrial site. Having already collaborated on sculptures in Europe and Canada, they embarked on an artist residency at MACAM to create intertwined works, drawing inspiration from the surroundings and using natural materials. Elparo creates an in-situ piece, engaging with nature and the old lime factory, while Coomans presents a multifaceted exhibition, including drawing, installation, and video, in a creative exploration fueled by encounters and journeys.
The event is in collaboration with Artemed and Zico House

Zawyeh Gallery is delighted to unveil the “Sliman Mansour: Limited Edition” exhibition on Saturday, 12 August 2023 at 6 pm. The exhibition marks the launch of Mansour’s exclusive collection of signed limited edition prints, thoughtfully curated from his extensive works spanning throughout his artistic career since the 1970s.
This collection of unique hand-signed copies, will be displayed for the first time, offering the public an opportunity to view and potentially acquire pieces that capture the essence of Mansour’s work.
Born in 1947 in the town of Birzeit, Palestine, Mansour is a pioneer artist and one of the founders of the Palestinian art movement. Throughout the years, his paintings profoundly reflected the Palestinian heritage and struggle. Palestinian symbols such as peasants, oranges, olive trees, and Palestinian women in traditional embroidered dresses take center stage in his paintings and weave a tale of resilience, identity, and connection to the land. This special exhibition celebrates Mansour’s art, and the enduring spirit of his artworks dedicated to Palestine.

The Mosaic Rooms is pleased to announce In the shade of the sun, a group exhibition contemplating the relationship between politics and aesthetics by an exciting new generation of Palestinian artists. The exhibition comprises new multimedia installations by artists Mona Benyamin, Xaytun Ennasr and Dina Mimi as well as a new sonic performance commission by Makimakkuk.
Working across mediums that include film, installation, music and gaming, In the shade of the sun brings together artists that are forging a new language to think about and with Palestine. Their individual practices intertwined through making works for future times within the crisis of the present, in soft expressions and radical politics, from the absurd to the poetic.
This group of artists is brought together by artists Ruanne Abou-Rahme & Basel Abbas as part of their Bilna’es (in the negative) project, a platform that seeks to expand the bounds of collaboration through an adisciplinary approach. Bilna’es (in the negative) was born out of a need to support artistic communities in Palestine and beyond. It experiments in re-distributing resources and practicing alternative support structures.
Independent researcher and curator Adam HajYahia has been specially invited by Bilna’es to contribute a text to the exhibition and will be co-curating the exhibition’s accompanying public programme.
This exhibition forms part of The Mosaic Rooms 2023 programme, which seeks to interrogate questions of active solidarity; to consider how we can continue to collaborate, host, and create sustainable support networks that enable critical and creative artistic practices.

Inspired by the corporeality of painting techniques present in movements such as Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, and Kinetic art, the selection of artists fearlessly rejected figuration within painting.
The exhibition will include a selection of artworks by Abdelkader Guermaz (Algeria, 1919-1996), Asma M’Naouar (Tunisia, b. 1965), Chafic Abboud (Lebanon, 1926-2004), Hedi Turki (Tunisia, 1922-2019), Leopoldo Torres-Agüero (Argentina, 1922-1995), Mahjoub Ben Bella (Algeria, 1946-2020), Mohamed Khadda (Algeria, 1930-1991), and Nasser Assar (Iran, 1928-2011).

Zalfa Halabi art gallery is pleased to hosting Aida Halloum exhibition, titled: Abstractions from Thursday, September 7, 2023 until Thursday, November 2, 2023.
Inspired by her surroundings in the Bekaa and Arsal, Aida Halloum, is a master colorist that paints windows of abstractions. Halloum is a graduate of the Lebanese University with a Masters in Fine Arts in 1993, and a student of Fatima El Hajj, a pioneer neo-imperssionist in the MENA region.
”I like to carve with colors” says Halloum when describing her process. Halloum builds her paintings with layers of colors and creates compositions with squares on top of squares, just like windows or portals that obstruct the viewer from recognizing a particular landscape. And yet, this same technique allows the viewer’s imagination to building its own image of the landscape presented, whether it’s real or imagined, or built based on a graphic memory by the artist. A feast of colors and blocks are what it’s all about.

Ayyam Gallery is pleased to present The Unsuspecting State, a solo exhibition featuring Abdalla Al Omari’s recent body of work. This will be his second solo exhibition at Ayyam Gallery, but his first as a represented artist. Please join us for the vernissage on September 18th from 6 pm – 9 pm, in presence of the artist.
Stepping away from his characteristic sarcasm and semi-caricatural representation, Abdalla represents the mundane to express themes that are everything but that. He captures our quotidian and intimate gestures alluding to our deepest secrets and regrets. Deep beliefs and the most discrete thoughts come through when immortalizing moments of everyday life. The unspoken taboos emanating through the movements, sexuality, religion, and addiction, are all part of the conversation. All along, Abdalla plays with anonymity, keeping things universal: The trivial and banal shared by the ordinary person.
The artist leaves the viewer questioning, what the character is doing, and who it could be. Is it an auto-portrait or people in his life? The paradoxical ambiguity, incompleteness, and uncertainty invite the viewer to delve into the image. A sense of voyeurism, where the headless character is viewed without consent, not as a sexual fetish but as an unexplainable urge to observe.
Scale and composition play a significant role in the perception of the work. Tight and tangible spaces are created within a state of awkwardness, while cutting down the elements to the bare minimum. It becomes a visual depiction of fragmented story and a sense of detachment and isolation. The absence of the landscape and the limited space around the subject suggests a dense, yet minimalistic, compositional play between the subject and the background; an eternal fight between the individual and the surrounding environment.

The Sharjah Art Museum presents Lasting Impressions: Samia Halaby, a Palestinian artist born in Jerusalem in 1936, currently living in New York. This ia a major retrospective of her work and will include 180 works of various sizes and media representing her career through abstract paintings, sculptures, digital works, documentary drawings and more.
With a profound persuasion that future innovation in pictures lies in abstraction, she has remained dedicated to its boundless potential for over six decades. The abstraction she presents has its basis in reality by being an imitation of principles extracted from reality rather than one particular appearance of reality. Continuing her artistic endeavors until the present, she employs visual abstraction to convert what our senses have stored in our memory over a long period of time , “what the viewer and I already know”, into abstract visual form .Through such abstract creations she represent the inherent visual experience that resides within us all – abstract shape, color, light, and movement combine into an art in which the viewer recognizes their own experiences. She does so by employing the extensive knowledge regarding methods and technologies that she avidly studied ranging from methods of using paint to using digital media.
Through her visionary approach to abstract painting, she has gained an impressive reputation, solidifying her standing as a forward-thinking artist. Through her unique artistic style, extensive range of methods, and prolific artistry, she has redefined the notion of abstraction with a remarkable level of precision, ensuring the clarity in her creative process and cementing her position as a visionary abstract painter.
The artist’s interpretation of the exhibition’s title, “Lasting Impressions”, is that it reflects the wonderful reaction her work elicits in the youths of our time especially among Arab youth whom she admires. She takes note of their talents and high commitments to our future. These discerning viewers perceive her abstraction exactly as she envisions, recognizing in it a reflection of their own pre- existing experience. Her painting “mirrors our shared perception of the world we live in.” as she describes it.
As a Palestinian artist who was born in the city of Jerusalem on December 12m, 1936, she experiences the agony of exile and displacement from her homeland 1948. The painful memory of exile enters her painting not as subject matter but often as titles to place in Palestine she loves. She will not mix political history with her exploration of abstraction but she does state that being loyal to abstraction is itself a political art. Palestine as experience is clearly the driving force allowing her to exert great effort to create the documentary series of memorializing the Kafr Qasem Massacre.
Samia Halaby is an internationally recognized artist known for her exceptional talent. Alongside her artistic pursuits, she is a dedicated advocate for Palestinian rights. Remarkably, in spite of her extensive oeuvre and serious writing, things often provoke her sense of humor and playfulness.
The exhibition is part of the Lasting Impressions series, held annually at the Sharjah Art Museum. The aim is to focus on prominent Arab artists who had a prolific career and left a lasting impression on the development and evolution of modern art in the Arab world.

Mark Hachem Gallery is pleased to hosting of visionary Syrian artist, Rima Salamoun solo exhibition , titled ” Them”.
Salamoun describes herself as a dedicated observer of human evolution and the ever-shifting tides of change. Fueled by her profound fascination with the human experience and her passion for drawing and painting, she has cemented herself in the art world as an unparalleled storyteller.
In her work, Salamoun delves into the lives of women ; She places great importance on representing the human condition, and all the paradoxes within it. She views herself, and indeed all artists, as witnesses of life. Her work is like a diary; she imbues each brushstroke with intention, depicting the world and people she perceives, narrating her experiences through art.
Through this process, her works embody the contemplation, inquiry, and uncertainty that are everpresent in the human mind, and begin a conversation between the past self and the present self, a primary text in time. Moreover, Salamoun’s oeuvre navigates dichotomy and paradox, engaging in a dance of life’s dualities: love and hatred, past and future, shadow and light.

The Third Line is pleased to announce our third solo exhibition with Sahand Hesamiyan. Marking the artist’s 24-year journey with steel, Prolepsis will showcase a collection of sculptures that celebrate his dedication to this medium, and shine a light on a trove of long-cherished yet unrealised projects.
rolepsis serves as a moment of reflection for Hesamiyan. While the artist is renowned for his ambitious large-scale works, this exhibition presents miniature forms of those anticipated projects that remain unmaterialised, but not forgotten. Each sculpture becomes a poignant echo of what could have been, and Hesamiyan prompts us to consider the interplay between aspiration and realisation.
By blending the precise geometric principles of Islamic architecture with the artist’s minimalistic sensibilities, his work conveys the profound and spiritual notions deeply rooted in ancient Iranian heritage. Through a unique reinterpretation of elements drawn from Iranian architecture, Hesamiyan not only highlights the fundamental design and conceptual significance but also underscores their pivotal role in shaping the history of Islamic art.
As viewers move through the exhibition, they embark on a journey into the intricacies of the artist’s creative process. Witnessing the genesis of his ideas, this experience grants a profound understanding of Hesamiyan’s commitment to his craft, fostering a deeper connection with the artist’s process.

Leila Heller Gallery is pleased to announce Lebanese artist Ali Cha’aban’s solo show titled “I Guess I Am Still Angry”, opening on 28th September 2023.
Exploring the evocative theme of childhood nostalgic utopia; delving into the complexities of memory, longing, and the yearning for an idealized past, “I Guess I’m Still Angry” unveils the captivating concept of childhood nostalgia.
Within the depths of our memories lie fragments of our childhood utopias. This exhibition seeks to examine the potency of these recollections, exploring how they shape our understanding of the world and influence our desires for a better future.
Embracing anger as a catalyst for change and self-discovery, when harnessed constructively, can fuel artistic expression and ignite a powerful dialogue. Drawing from his own life experiences, Ali delves into the complexities of anger, inviting viewers to engage with this often-misunderstood emotion and to reconsider its role in our lives.
Childhood nostalgic utopia often emerges from a longing for lost innocence—a time when the world seemed simpler and more hopeful. Ali through his work, aims to challenge societal narratives and stereotypes surrounding identity and anger, while highlighting its potential as a catalyst for positive change and personal growth. Through this
collection, the artist wants to revisit old memories as well as old artworks, that shaped him to become who he is today.

Leila Heller Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of the Estate of Jehangir Vazifdar (1920-2011), one of India’s most prolific modern artists, opening on 28th September 2023.
Jehangir Vazifdar was born in Bombay in 1920, into an era where cubism and other defining forces of modernism were shattering the very boundaries of art. He was part of a resplendent period in modern Indian Art. The late 60s and 70s were a time when the Indian sensibility found fresh voice, a time when new styles, techniques and visions
came into the arc-light. His work always reflected current ideas, yet remained unique and original. His manner of defining and expanding on art via form, colour, composition and texture proliferated into numerous theories and postulations.
Many people recognize Jehangir Vazifdar as the famous architect who gave the city of Mumbai some of its iconic buildings. However, only a few knew about his true passion for art. He refused to commercialise his art, because of which his works remained hidden for a long time. He was a visionary as much as an artist, who believed that to create something non-existent in nature, one must study the various forms created by nature and use the simplest shapes – straight lines, symmetrical patterns, uniformity of texture and the colour deep black.
His works speak a unique language of colour, which allows people to read his paintings like a book. For example, he associated white with death, black with peace and a combination of the two colours with heaven. He devised languages of colours, while correlating hues with various abstract concepts and emotions. These have been recorded
in his unpublished ‘Color Alphabet and Dictionary.’ He dedicated his artistic career to producing works that could not be copied or otherwise forged. His most prized technique, developed after years of experiments, is called ‘Fakeproof’, deriving its name from the fact that it is impossible to copy. This technique can primarily be seen in his portrait works. A combination of horizontal and vertical brush strokes along with thick strokes carved using a footrule, is the essence of this process, with colours which are directly applied from tubes on to the canvas.
Amongst collectors of Jehangir Vazifdar’s ouvre, special mention must be made of Abby Grey. An avid lover of Indian art and artists, she visited India frequently in the early sixties. Within a short time, her collection included several luminaries. She met Vazifdar in 1965, and described him as “by far the most astonishing artist” she had met on that trip. Despite his reluctance, she could acquire a single piece of work from him. Decades later, in 2015, the canvas was part of a major retrospective, ‘Abby Grey and Indian modernism’, serving as a vivid motif of a legendary era in Indian Art. Amongst the artists Jehangir Vazifdar showed with are Bhuppen khakkar, Vivasavan, Prabhakar
Barwe & SB Palsiker, some legends of the art world.

The culmination of this year-long programme is the Abu Dhabi Art event in November, which provides an important sales platform for participating galleries whilst also offering these galleries an opportunity to showcase ambitious installations and site-specific works by their artists to a wide audience.
