At Galerie Tanit Beirut, a solo exhibition titled “Oro Tenebris” by Zad Moultaka takes place from June 24 to August 1, 2024. “Oro Tenebris” meaning to praise darkness, embarks on a quest to explore the inner realm of dormant spirituality. Reflecting on this, the exhibition was conceived not as a cohesive collection but as a dynamic journey.
The artwork evolves along an unpredictable path, riddled with countless bifurcations. To follow it, one must relinquish preconceived notions of self, embracing the unknown. This journey alters us profoundly, as each step and stumble reshapes us under the influence of a mysterious desire. The more we surrender our will, the more vibrant and unexpected forms and colours emerge, revealing themselves with stark clarity. Painting becomes an exercise in allowing an indescribable essence to surface, something unimaginable until it appears, making perfect sense in its existence.

Zad Moultaka, born in the contemporary theatre world, is both a composer and visual artist. He began playing piano and painting at five, moving from Lebanon to Paris in 1984. In 1989, he won First Prize at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris. By 1993, he shifted focus from his international interpreting career to composition and visual art. While trained in Western musical disciplines, Moultaka’s Mediterranean roots inform his unique musical language, earning him numerous prestigious awards.
Simultaneously, Moultaka has thrived in visual arts across various media, including installations, painting, photography, and video. His works have been exhibited globally at venues such as Galerie Tanit in Beirut, Cromwell Place in London, the reopening of the Sursock Museum in Beirut, Domaine de Kerguéhennec in Bignan, Galerie Tanit in Munich, Aedaen Gallery in Strasbourg, Totah Gallery in New York, Oscar Niemeyer Dome in Tripoli, Centre Pompidou in Metz, and the Lebanese Pavilion at the 57th Venice Art Biennale, among others. In 2021, Maison Louis Vuitton commissioned him to design a trunk for its founder’s 200th birthday. His works are part of prestigious collections like the Boghossian Foundation in Belgium, FFA Private Bank in Lebanon, and the Institut du Monde Arabe in France.
