Kais Salman was born in Tartous, Syria in 1976 and lives and works in Beirut. He studied Fine Art at Damascus University, and his paintings use satire to subvert the normalisation of greed, consumerism and vanity that has come to define our globalized present. More recently, his work has explored topics as diverse as the psychological and physical toll of the violence in Syria, terrorism, cosmetic surgery, religious fanaticism and imperialism – themes that speak to effects of globalization and its discontents. His provocative and somewhat sinister subjects are exaggerated to comical effect, which is enhanced by his highly saturated colour palette, to highlight the absurdity of our contemporary era. Salman’s paintings are currently housed in private collections throughout the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. His solo and group exhibitions include the 2014 Alexandria Biennale, Ayyam Gallery DIFC, Dubai (2014, 2010), Ayyam Gallery Beirut (2015, 2014, 2012), Ayyam Gallery Al Quoz, Dubai (2014, 2011, 2010), Damascus Museum of Modern Art (2009), The Park Avenue Armory, New York (2008) and Carthage Festival for Coast Mediterranean Sea Artists, Tunisia (2005).
