Leila Jabre Jureidini’s painting and sculptural work bridges the gulf between classical and conceptual art. Born in Lebanon in 1963, the Beirut-based artist studied in Paris and New York and worked as a designer for many years. Her bronze sculptures in voluptuous feminine figures, caught in yogic and stretched poses, turns the metal into malleable form that celebrates the fluidity of movement. Her mixed media work also plays with forms, here branded drink labels such as Pepsi, 7Up and Almaza beer that are turned into a patchwork pattern, inviting a reflection on the pervasive effects of consumerism and commercialism on contemporary culture. Currently based in Beirut, Jureidini has participated in numerous international exhibitions in London, Paris and Beirut including at Artspot RMB gallery, Beirut Art Fair, Parallax Art Fair, and the XXX and XXXI Salon d’Automne of the Sursock Museum for which she received a “Mention spéciale du Jury’’ in 2012. Her work is permanently exhibited at the Galerie Janine Rubeiz in Beirut.
