Reflecting the struggles and resilience of women, Galerie Janine Rubeiz unveils ‘Sagas of Painful Bodies,’ the inaugural solo exhibition by Manar Ali Hassan, from, May 2nd until May 31st, 2024. Across history and into our contemporary era, the anguish experienced by women, particularly intertwined with childbirth and the enigma of various physical ailments, has often been relegated to the shadows. A lack of understanding of their pain has led to the neglect of pain management, leaving a silent plea echoing through time.
‘Sagas of Painful Bodies’ is a narrative-driven exhibition that encourages exploration into the intimate, personal, and societal facets of being a woman grappling with physical agony. Focused on the journeys of seven Lebanese women, including the artist herself, all navigating the chronic condition of Fibromyalgia, this project employs art to delve into the narratives of enduring illness and bodily expressions, revealing disrupted experiences, meanings, and repercussions.
Through painterly expression, the artist also contemplates broader existential inquiries, forging poetic links between identity, personal narratives, and societal prejudices. Drawing inspiration from her comrades in pain, the artist seeks to fully embrace and interpret their stories, both vocalised and unspoken, translating them into impactful artistic manifestations. These creations stand as a homage to the resilience and fortitude of individuals enduring chronic pain, bearing witness to their unyielding spirit amidst life’s adversities.
