Tashkeel, a prominent art and design incubator in the UAE, presents “Ways of Seeing,” a solo exhibition by Lebanese artist Jamal Tayara-Baroudy, as a part of its 2023 Autumn Season. This exhibition marks Jamal’s debut solo show in Dubai, where she will showcase her diverse artistic talents, including graphic design, eco-printing, and installation art.
This collection is the result of Jamal’s creative work as the 17th graduate of Tashkeel’s Critical Practice Programme (CPP), which aims to nurture talent based in the UAE by providing ongoing studio support, training, critique, and production opportunities for practising artists residing in the UAE. The CPP tailors its programs to the specific needs of the artists and their research areas. During her time in the CPP, Jamal received mentoring from curator Lesley Ann Gray and Dr Mohammad Abiad, an Associate Professor and the Director of the Laboratories for the Environment, Agriculture, and Food (LEAF) at the American University of Beirut.
Jamal, an alumna of the Lebanese American University, has made a significant impact on the UAE’s art scene through her branding agency, JamJar Design, which she established in 2002, and her art studio, Art Like, founded in 2011. She has been an active member of Tashkeel since 2016 and has displayed her work in various venues across Dubai and Sharjah.
Regarding the exhibition, Jamal shared, “Ways of Seeing delves into the profound connections between human experiences, geography, and memory. Over the past 18 months, I conducted extensive research on the giant milkweed (Calotropis Procera) and its significance in heritage and human experiences. The art I’ve created reevaluates our relationship with nature and the intrinsic value of plant life.”
In addition to guided exhibition tours led by the artist on November 5 and 19 (11 a.m.-12 p.m., 12-1 p.m.), Jamal will participate in a conversation on Tuesday, October 31 (6:30 – 7:30 p.m.). Furthermore, on October 29 and November 26 (3–5 p.m.), she will host two drawing workshops tailored for younger visitors aged 9-14 years old.
About Jamal Tayara-Baroudy
Jamal Tayara-Baroudy is a versatile artist and graphic designer, proficient in various mediums. She started her career by working in advertising and branding agencies, later founding ‘Art Like This’ in 2011—an independent studio specialising in art, design, and site-specific installations. Trained in Lebanon as both a fine artist and graphic designer, Jamal infuses technical precision into her work, emphasising shape, scale, and repetition, both visually and in her creative process. Her fascination lies in the interplay between the natural and human realms, symbolizing the garden as a manifestation of Paradise. Jamal seamlessly blends digital and analogue approaches, exploring the synergy between science and art. Her art revolves around transforming organic materials, meticulously harvested and manipulated. She investigates natural forms through forensic rubbings, digital scanning, and traditional drawing techniques. Her practice serves as an ongoing dialogue with nature, evolving with the changing landscape. Jamal’s work has been featured in various group exhibitions, and she was shortlisted for the Van Cleef & Arpels Middle East Emergent Designer Prize. Notably, she collaborated with Brazilian artist Vane Barini to reconstruct Barini’s ancestral family tree using Arabic letters from the early 20th century for a group exhibition in Sao Paulo.
