The Special Edition: 20 years of Art Dubai

Art Dubai Special Edition

Opening to the public in two days, Art Dubai returns in a modified format from 15–17 May 2026 at Madinat Jumeirah, following its original April dates. Marking the fair’s twentieth anniversary, the special edition brings together around 75 presentations spanning contemporary, modern, and digital practices, alongside expanded collaborations with institutions across the UAE. Free and open to all visitors, the edition foregrounds the galleries, artists, and cultural networks that have shaped the region’s art ecosystem over the past two decades. Through exhibitions, performances, screenings, and talks, the programme reflects Art Dubai’s longstanding emphasis on regional perspectives, international exchange, and sustained engagement with the cultural landscape of the city and beyond.

Programme and Galleries

This special edition of Art Dubai brings together more than 45 gallery presentations, with a majority drawn from the region, reflecting Dubai’s position as a central meeting point for contemporary art across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. Alongside galleries long connected to the region, the fair also welcomes first-time participants, expanding its network across local and international contexts. Beyond the booths, the programme extends through installations, performances, screenings, and talks developed with institutions including Alserkal Avenue, Art Jameel, Dubai Collection, Barjeel Art Foundation, and Sharjah Art Foundation. Highlights include the twentieth edition of the Global Art Forum, new commissions integrated throughout the site, and exhibitions tracing modern and contemporary artistic practices across the region.

Twenty Years of Art Dubai

Since its founding in 2007, Art Dubai has evolved alongside the rapid transformation of the UAE’s cultural landscape. Emerging at a moment when commercial and institutional infrastructures for contemporary art in the region were still developing, the fair became part of a broader shift that positioned Dubai as a site of exchange between regional and international art scenes. Over two decades, its programming expanded beyond the format of an annual fair to include commissions, talks, educational initiatives, digital platforms, and long-term collaborations with institutions and independent practitioners.

Its trajectory also mirrors wider changes in artistic production and circulation across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. While maintaining a commercial framework, Art Dubai increasingly operated as a platform where conversations around migration, technology, ecology, urbanisation, and identity could unfold across exhibitions and public programmes. The inclusion of modern and digital sections further reflected changing artistic and curatorial priorities within the region.

At the same time, the fair developed in relation to Dubai itself: a city shaped by mobility, cultural plurality, and accelerated growth. Its twentieth edition arrives during a moment of ongoing regional uncertainty, offering a more focused format that turns attention toward the galleries, institutions, and communities that have contributed to the city’s evolving cultural ecology over the past twenty years.

For two decades, Art Dubai has remained closely connected to the artists, galleries, collectors, and cultural practitioners who have shaped artistic discourse across the region. This anniversary edition reflects both that longer history and the current moment, bringing together a concentrated programme grounded in regional networks, independent perspectives, and ongoing dialogues between local contexts and international practices.
