In this issue, we go back to basics and review definitions of frequently (or infrequently) words in the art world while referencing art from the MENASA region. IN THE FOLLOWING ARTICLES, YOU’LL DISCOVER AN ALPHABETICAL LIST OF ART-RELATED WORDS PAIRED WITH ARTWORKS THAT BEST ILLUSTRATE EACH WORD’S MEANING. HUE
Hue refers to the gradation of colours, shades and tints within art. Often, the hue of a work of art has intimate connections to its emotive meaning. In Three Mothers and Three Exotic Birds Under an Olive Tree, for example, by the pioneering Palestinian-American abstractionist Samia Halaby, hues combine to create scales of brightly coloured squares, dots, circles, triangles and organically shaped brushstrokes, which form to convey deeply saturated plum, coral, turquoise and fuchsia hues on the surface of the canvas.
