A Dubai exhibit highlights the magic of unknown places. An exhibition investigating Unknown Places reveals far-flung landscapes often hidden from view. This unique exhibit, made possible by German airline Lufthansa, made its Middle Eastern debut in September 2019 at Dubai’s Alserkal Avenue.

The exhibition – part of the airline’s #SayYesToTheWorld campaign – aims to capture the unique and breathtaking photos of our world, presenting a new series of 10 unpublished images with the idea of stimulating ordinary people to look at the natural world with wonder and curiosity.

The idea behind Unknown Places came after acclaimed Italian artist Davide Calluori and his studio, B612, approached Lufthansa with the idea of developing a platform in which to share multimedia presentations. The two came up with the idea of a travelling exhibition highlighting the power of photography to capture the spirit of the natural world, landscapes that are all too often hidden from view.

All of the composite digital images in the show were created by combining photos taken from different locations. These were in turn used to make convincing representations of Unknown Places, which at the same time call into question the constant barrage of images we are regularly exposed to on social media.

One of the most iconic photos in the exhibition is of Spine Peak covered in clouds and fog. Located in the Dukla Pass, the lowest mountain pass in the Carpathian Mountains, the idyllic and remote Spine Peak rises over 1,000 metres above sea level. It is home to majestic cacti plants, which according to local legend, originate from the Americas.

Another incredible shot in the exhibition is of Sunset Gate, an extremely rare sighting of lava running across a remote area not far from the Katla volcano in Iceland. The composition of smouldering black rock and fiery yellow lava reveals a sight not often seen and hark back to the idea behind the exhibition.

The project is meant to inspire people to look at the natural world through the lens of photography. Kristina Oestrom, marketing director EMEA, said: “Travel broadens our horizons and provides an opportunity to marvel at the beauty of the world around us. The essence of a journey is in the eye of the beholder, those who have experienced something first-hand. It is our hope that everyone who has explored Unknown Places will be inspired to ‘say yes to the world’ and choose to embark on their own voyages of discovery.”
