‘Reviewing Landscape’ at Elmarsa Gallery

Elmarsa Gallery presents a diverse assembly of artists encompassing classical, modern, and contemporary painters whose works delve into the landscape. The evolution of landscape painting unfolds gradually through distinct historical periods, transitioning from classic landscapes of the 17th and 18th centuries to the recognition and legitimisation of historic landscapes by European art Academies in the late 18th century. Notably, North Africa emerged as a pivotal destination for artists at the turn of the 19th century, inspiring impressionist and expressionist practices, and shaping the discourse within the landscape painting community.

Artistic movements such as the Tunisian Salon Society of French Orientalist Painters, and the Society of Algerian Artists and Orientalists fostered discourse, expanding possibilities for scholarship and education. The narrative of landscape painting evolved further in the early 20th century with the emergence of groups like the Groupe des Dix and the Aouchem group, emphasising the need for intimate depictions of the North African landscape. The Ecole de Tunis, founded in 1947, contributed to reviving traditional motifs in a new era of social realism.
