‘Khamseen,’ is an exhibition featuring over fifty artworks spanning fifty years of Saudi Arabian visual culture (1965-2015). Curated in collaboration with Qaswra Hafez and Hafez Gallery, the exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, photography, prints, and installations. It begins with the pioneers of the 1960s and 1970s, who established the first exhibitions and ateliers. The exhibition then highlights the artists of the 1980s to late 1990s, who explored diverse topics while continuing traditional mediums. The early 2000s saw a new generation experimenting with various media, influenced by the internet. ‘Khamseen’ aims to spark discussion on Saudi Arabia’s artistic evolution through panel discussions and tours.

The exhibition will also delve into the rich tradition of Islamic calligraphy, displaying important manuscripts from the 8th to the 21st century, including early Qur’anic manuscripts in Kufic script and lavishly illuminated Qajar pieces. Another focal point is a collection of five limited-edition handbags designed by HRH Princess Nourah Al Faisal, inspired by Saudi cultural heritage and created in collaboration with Asprey and her brand Nuun. Each handbag celebrates the diversity and beauty of Saudi Arabia’s major regions through distinctive colours, motifs, and embroidery techniques. Princess Al Faisal, also the CEO of Art of Heritage, is dedicated to preserving the Kingdom’s artefacts and traditional crafts. Complementing the displayed art and artifacts, a series of events including panel discussions and gallery tours will immerse visitors in the rich history of the Middle East. Even Sotheby’s Café will transform to reflect the region’s café culture.
