Simone Fattal’s exhibition, titled “The Manifestations of the Voyage,” will be held at Portikus in Frankfurt from June 24 to September 24, 2023. Fattal’s artistic journey has been influenced by her upbringing in Syria and Lebanon, where she witnessed the clash between ancient civilisations and the scars of war. The exhibition showcases her new body of work that explores the contemporary human condition and our relationship with nature, drawing inspiration from mythological figures of the past.
The exhibition emphasises the interconnectedness between written and visual expression by dedicating a reading room to Fattal’s role as an artist and publisher. The room features a comprehensive selection of books published by The Post-Apollo Press, a publishing house she co-founded in 1982. Fattal’s sculptures, collages, and drawings are infused with motifs and characters from her readings on Sufism, Islamic mysticism, Greek epic poems, and Egyptian mythology.
One of Fattal’s significant influences is the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, which explores the relationship between humanity and the natural world. The exhibition showcases a colossal sculpture of Humbaba, the guardian of the Cedar Forest, symbolising deforestation and the fatalistic connection between man and nature. Large ink drawings of trees and scattered mushroom sculptures further emphasise the theme of humanity’s relationship with the environment.
The exhibition also includes a reclining figure called “Young Man,” representing future generations, placed in contrast to Humbaba in his forest. Fattal prompts viewers to reflect on the ongoing journey of mankind, combining historical references and different means of representation to highlight the paradox of massive works pointing to their fragility.
Additionally, the exhibition pays tribute to Fattal’s publishing venture, The Post-Apollo Press, which aimed to bring literature from diverse backgrounds to new audiences through translation. The reading room features wallpaper reproducing Fattal’s drawing, and audio contributions from Jalal Toufic and Ala Younis add further depth to the collaborative effort behind the publishing house.
“The Manifestations of the Voyage” is accompanied by Fattal’s first monograph, which explores her role as both an artist and a publisher. The publication includes essays by companions and international authors and will be released in September 2023.
