The Rooted Nomad: MF Husain at Qatar Museums

The Rooted Nomad: MF Husain, an immersive exhibition honouring Maqbool Fida Husain (1913–2011), one of India’s most renowned modern artists. The exhibition is realised through a collaboration between Qatar Museums (QM) and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA), New Delhi, as part of Evolution Nation; Qatar Museums’ 18-month campaign that marks fifty years of cultural growth since the founding of the National Museum of Qatar, continuing the spirit of the Qatar–India 2019 Year of Culture.

Following its debut at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia in 2024, The Rooted Nomad traces Husain’s artistic and personal journey from his formative years in India to his later life in Doha, where he lived as a citizen of Qatar. The title reflects the dual essence of Husain’s life; deeply grounded in his homeland yet defined by a nomadic, cosmopolitan spirit. Through a dynamic, multi-sensory presentation, the exhibition explores his distinctive visual language that intertwines myth, memory, and modernity. An artistic meditation on identity, heritage, and nationhood in postcolonial India.

The immersive environment incorporates images of more than 80 of Husain’s works interwoven with archival photographs, drawings, poetry, cinema posters, and rare materials. The presentation evokes a sense of movement and transformation, echoing Husain’s lifelong exploration of mobility, migration, and cultural hybridity.

Conceived and curated by KNMA and designed by Visioni Srl, Rome, the exhibition expands on the idea of yatra – a journey of artistic and spiritual evolution. Through motion graphics, animation, choreography, and sound design, the experience offers a humanistic vision that celebrates Husain’s creative legacy and universal themes of belonging and renewal.

Location: QM Gallery Katara, Qatar.

Date: 28 October 2025 until 7 February 2026
