Sherif Hayek and Dani Chakour on Curating Art in the Culinary World

Blurring the boundaries between gastronomy and culture, the Em Sherif Art Foundation transforms restaurants into living galleries, where Lebanese art, design, and cuisine converge. Founded by Chef Mireille Hayek and CEO Dani Chakour, and curated by Sherif Hayek, the Foundation carries Lebanese creativity across global landmarks, from Paris to Beirut and London. What began with a passion for contemporary art has become an international platform where each location offers not only a culinary journey but also an “Art Menu” that tells the evolving story of Lebanon’s cultural identity.

In this conversation, Selections spoke with Sherif Hayek (S.H) and Dani Chakour (D.C) about the Foundation’s vision, the choice of artists, and how they see Em Sherif as both a restaurant and a cultural stage.

Sherif, in presenting artists such as Ziad Antar, Hussein Madi, and Willy Aractingi, what narrative of Lebanese art are you seeking to convey across these global locations?

S.H: Through these artists, our aim is to reveal the richness and plurality of Lebanese creativity. Each one represents a distinct voice, rooted in different eras, mediums, and artistic practices. Yet, when brought together, they form a collective narrative that speaks to Lebanon’s layered cultural identity, one that bridges heritage and innovation, memory and imagination. By showcasing this diversity on an international stage, we hope to share a story of Lebanon that is as multifaceted as it is enduring, affirming the country’s place within the broader global dialogue on art and culture.

How do you see the “Art Menu” evolving in the future, and what possibilities does it open for engaging audiences beyond the traditional gallery or museum?

S.H: The Art Menu was conceived as a way to bring art into everyday life, making it approachable, conversational, and woven seamlessly into the dining experience. As it evolves, we envision it becoming not only a curated selection of artworks but also a dynamic storytelling platform, one that introduces guests to the narratives, processes, and inspirations behind each artist.
By presenting art in this intimate and multisensory context, the Art Menu breaks down the barriers of the traditional gallery or museum, encouraging audiences to encounter creativity in a more personal and accessible way. In the future, we see it expanding into new formats, from digital extensions to thematic collaborations, further enriching the cultural experience and offering new points of entry for audiences to connect with Lebanese art and artists worldwide.

Dani, you began with a personal art collection of more than 600 works. What motivated you to transform this private passion into a global cultural foundation?

D.C: What began as a personal journey of collecting soon evolved into a responsibility to share. The collection reflected not only my own passion for Lebanese art but also the immense talent and creativity of our country’s artists. Transforming it into a foundation was a way to open these works to the world, to give them visibility beyond the confines of a private collection. By integrating art into the dining experience, we are able to create spaces where culture and daily life meet, offering guests a richer encounter with Lebanon’s heritage and contemporary creativity. Ultimately, the motivation was to turn a deeply personal passion into a living platform that celebrates, preserves, and amplifies Lebanese culture on a global stage.

As Em Sherif grows across cities worldwide, how do you ensure that each new outpost deepens rather than dilutes the Foundation’s cultural mission and stays connected to its Lebanese roots?

D.C: Our mission is firmly anchored in Lebanese creativity, and that commitment shapes every decision we make as we expand globally. Each new outpost is conceived as more than just a restaurant, it is a cultural space where Lebanese art, craft, and storytelling are woven into the experience. While we adapt to the context of each city and engage with its local audience, the essence of our identity remains constant: celebrating Lebanon’s artistic heritage and contemporary voices. By thoughtfully curating artworks, collaborations, and cultural activations, we ensure that every location not only reflects its environment but also amplifies our core vision, keeping Lebanon at the heart of the narrative, wherever in the world we may be.
